Bears Join Force with Gordon for Women's Second Grade

W2s announcement

We are delighted to announce that the SCA Women's Subcommittee has approved a joint application from UTS North Sydney and Gordon to field a team in this season's Women's Second Grade competition.

Gordon have been friends of the Bears since the enactment of our women's section, and both clubs are excited by the prospect of this joint team. For UTS North Sydney, it is an opportunity to continue building a pathway for women and girls to play cricket up to the elite level. For Gordon, it is an opportunity to consolidate playing numbers and strength and remain a perennial contender at all levels of NSW Women’s Premier Cricket. The lower north shore has some of the strongest youth participation numbers in Sydney and the maintenance of both club’s programs will ensure these girls have ample opportunity to pursue their cricket through two strong, local clubs as they reach Premier Cricket level in the coming years. The aim of both clubs is for the joint team to only be necessary for a single season as both clubs develop the talent already in their ranks, ready for the 2022/23 season.

The target is to field 6 players from each club in each round. Gordon will supply the team's captain, and our Brewer Shield captain from 2020-21, Lucy Warren, will be the side's vice captain. Players will wear the uniform of their club, with a joint hat, and matches will be split between the two clubs' venues. The squad will train together on a weekly basis, alternating between Bon Andrews and Chatswood Oval, under Michelle Goszko's guidance.

The Second Grade season will begin on Sunday 14 October and is expected to involve a combination of 50 and 20-over matches. We're thrilled to continue the expansion of our women's program and provide an opportunity for our talented female players to develop and prove themselves at a higher level of competition, and thank Gordon for collaborating with us. We look forward to seeing what the team achieves during 2021-22.
